Delhi Heritage Walks organizes heritage walks to different parts of the city of Delhi. The focus is on lesser known areas which are best seen & observed by walking.  Lodi Garden is one of our regular walks, repeated frequently. This walking tour covers the tomb of Mohammad Shah Sayyid, Bara Gumbad, Shish Gumbad, tomb of Sikandar Lodi, a Mughal era bridge called Athpula, a couple of late Mughal buildings & a turret, probably from the 14th century. The above are photos of the heritage walk to Lodi Garden on 25 November 2012, led by Moby Zachariah, team member, Delhi Heritage Walks.

This is without doubt, one of the best places to see in Delhi. A heritage walk here combined history with the sense of adventure & exploration. Our heritage walk in Mehrauli Archaeological Park covers Balban’s tomb, a site of archaeological excavation, ruins of a late Mughal residential settlement, Jamali Kamali mosque & tomb, Rajon ki Baoli (a Lodi period stepwell) & Dilkusha, or Thomas Metcalfe’s estate. The last comprises of altered landscape & modified ruins including Metcalfe’s folly, Mohammad Quli Khan’s tomb & a dovecot converted into a boathouse.

And winters are the perfect time to visit this massive site. There is large area to be explored, and walking here is almost a mini trek, with its rocky terrain & ruins almost consumed by vegetation. Add to it the reputation of its builders, the dynasty of the Tughluqs & the notorious tiff between the rulers & Nizamuddin Auliya, the revered Chishti sufi saint, which led to the site & the dynasty being cursed. And it is one of the largest in Asia, the other two competitors begin the Taj ul Masajid in Bhopal & the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore. The Jama Masjid stands on a ground higher than rest of the city & offers a panoramic view around. (more…)
