For a small trek through Delhi’s landscapes, try Northern Ridge, in the winters. Throw in exploration of some of the sites of 1857 which played out in this area, and it is a day well spent. Our heritage walk in Northern Ridge traces a route connecting a few landmarks of 1857 in the Kamla Nehru Northern Ridge. We start at Delhi University Vice Chancellor’s office, which is a notable example of colonial building style. It used to be the Vice Regal Lodge when the new city of Delhi was under construction. One piece of gossip about this building is that it was in the Registrar’s office here that Lord Mountbatten (last Viceroy of India) proposed to Edwina. To complete the triangle & the irony, we now have a bust of Nehru looking wistfully towards the building!!

Our heritage walk to Tughluqabad is one of the most awaited events. It always gets a large crowd, last year we had 55 people, this year, 62. And winters are the perfect time to visit this massive site. There is large area to be explored, and walking here is almost a mini trek, with its rocky terrain & ruins almost consumed by vegetation. Add to it the reputation of its builders, the dynasty of the Tughluqs & the notorious tiff between the rulers & Nizamuddin Auliya, the revered Chishti sufi saint, which led to the site & the dynasty being cursed. There are many a stories of cities of Delhi; how many people came, made it their home, only to be replaced by a new bunch. Today, their remnants are most visible as monumental heritage of Delhi. And south Delhi happens to be one of the densest in terms of these remains. After all, this is where the story of urban Delhi started, this is where the first cities of Delhi came up. Even when the capital moved up north & closer to the river Yamuna, this area was never abandoned. As a result, Mehrauli sees a continuous settlement for a 1000 odd years, which is an incredible trail back to the past! (more…)

Lodi Garden is one of the greenest & most pleasant places to walk around in the city of Delhi. It was originally royal burial area for Sayyids and Lodis. Today, it is more of joggers- paradise; the park works as a breather from the busy life of the city in the middle of numerous medieval Islamic monuments. The plan of the garden was laid down by British as a part of re-landscaping Delhi and was christened as Lady Willingdon Park. It was renamed ‘Lodi Garden’ post  Independence. Not just the scattered monuments, one can find variety of plants and trees here including Jamun tree, royal bottle palm, Neem, bamboo, Eucalyptus trees etc and numerous birds such as Parakeets, Mynahs, Kingfishers etc. (more…)

One of the oldest inhabited neighbourhoods in Delhi region, Mehrauli is a minefield of stories. It has been witness to the earliest capital cities of Delhi and has been continuously inhabited for almost a thousand years now, which makes it a great place to explore. Our heritage walk starts at the entrance to the Mehrauli Archaeological Park. The first group of monuments one comes across is a gateway and a recently excavated area which has a courtyard and rooms built around it. Balban’s tomb stands out amongst these ruins. (more…)
