Starting this month, we are making the street food walk in old Delhi a regular feature of our calendar. Moreover, the route we have chosen is a combination of food stops & some hidden gems of history in old Delhi. Hence the title ‘Heritage Walk & Street Food’. The group met at Jama Masjid, one of the most famous landmarks of Delhi & negotiated our way to Sitaram Bazaar, the end point for this heritage trail. Getting there can be quite a task though. Delhi Metro has made the old city easily accessible, but once out of the metro, get ready to face the madness here. The nearest metro station is Chawri Bazaar & the road leading from Chawri Bazaar to Jama Masjid is perpetually jam packed. There are rickshaws, hand pulled carts, scooters, cars, dogs & a sea of humanity all trying to keep going. One wrong move & the traffic comes to a standstill!! (more…)

The best time to organise a food walk one is the month of Ramzaan. This is the time when every dilliwala makes a trip to Jama Masjid to savour the flavors of iftar. A good starting point to this trail is the Chawri Bazaar metro station. Step out of gate no. 3 and a lane from the Hauz Qazi roundabout leads to Sitaram Bazaar which houses the shop in Kucha Pati Ram.There are 3-4 kulfi shops in this kucha, but Mahavir Prasad Kuremal is the best of the lot. One of our most popular trails is the food walk in old Delhi. We decided to give everyone a refreshing start with old Delhi’s special-Kulfi! The fruit flavoured kuflis and later the stuffed one’s- matka, malai, pomegranate, apple, mango- there wasn’t a dearth of choice and we tasted all one by one. From a sweet beginning to something spicy – we turned our heads from Sitaram Bazaar to Kulle wala in Chawri Bazaar. It took us 15 mins. to cover a small distance of 300 meters, due to the usual market chaos! But all of it was worth it once everyone savored the stuffed kulle of tomato, potato, pineapple and apple filled with pomegranate, peas and a spicy filling! From mirchi to something cooler we moved a few galis ahead to find a secret passage leading to Jain Coffee House. There was unending variety of sandwiches coupled with shakes. We tried mango, paneer, chikoo, apple, pomegranate layered with butter and home-made jam. Continue Reading This Post

The month of Ramzaan is a very exciting time in the old city: for locals and visitors alike. The noise, the lights, the crowds and chaos of the old city has to be seen to be believed. Add to it the excitement of Ramzaan and you have an electrifying atmosphere!
So this Friday we headed towards purani dilli for a food walk and to soak in the festive ambience of Ramzaan. For our very first food walk, we invited the noted food critic, Rahul Verma to take us around the lanes in old Delhi and sample its food. Our first stop was chaat at Ashok Chaat corner near Chawri Bazaar metro station. Continue Reading This Post
