The best time to organise a food walk one is the month of Ramzaan. This is the time when every dilliwala makes a trip to Jama Masjid to savour the flavors of iftar. A good starting point to this trail is the Chawri Bazaar metro station. Step out of gate no. 3 and a lane from the Hauz Qazi roundabout leads to Sitaram Bazaar which houses the shop in Kucha Pati Ram.There are 3-4 kulfi shops in this kucha, but Mahavir Prasad Kuremal is the best of the lot. The wait for monsoons is desperate & the weather is unrelenting. Still, a bunch of enthusiasts gathered this Sunday morning to explore old Delhi. Our heritage walk takes us along the main street of Chandni Chowk. This street was the main axis of the city of Shahjahanbad & still retains its centrality to movement & life in old Delhi. We meet at Digamber Jain Lal temple opposite the Red Fort. This is the oldest Jain temple here and is known for the charitable bird hospital in its premises. Next to it stands the Gauri Shankar temple dedicated to Shiv & Parvati. (more…)
This heritage walk in old Delhi covers the main street of Chandni Chowk, from Digambar Jain Lal Mandir opposite Red Fort right up till the Fatehpuri area. The Jain temple and Gauri Shankar temple are the two most important temples in old Delhi. Their shikhars are most prominently visible from a distance. The first one is contemporary to Shah Jahan’s time (mid 17th century) & is known for a bird hospital in its premises and the second was built in 18th century. It was in news recently as President Pratibha Patil visited the temple to offer prayers. (more…)
Our team at Delhi Heritage Walks had an opportunity to interact with students of St. Thomas School, Sahibabad and take them on a heritage walk at Mehrauli Archaeological Park. It was the last working day for them and they were all excited to explore! These were class X students and it was their first heritage walk. All were locals to Sahibabad but were well familiar with Delhi, its main historic site like the Qutb complex, the Red Fort & the Lotus Temple. Continue Reading This Post
